IMD Warns of Hotter Summer and More Heatwaves Across India

India is set to experience a significantly hotter summer this year, with a marked increase in the number of heatwave days, according to the latest seasonal forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The warning comes as temperatures are expected to remain above normal across most parts of the country during the April to June period.

India Heatwave Forecast

Regions in northwest and eastern India are likely to face the brunt of this summer’s extreme heat. The forecast indicates that many areas will see maximum temperatures surpassing historical averages, leading to more frequent and intense heatwave conditions. Areas in the western peninsular region and select parts of east-central and eastern India are among the few exceptions where temperatures are expected to remain closer to normal.

IMD Summer Prediction

Under normal conditions, India experiences about four to seven heatwave days between April and June. This year, however, that number is expected to rise to between six and ten across many regions. Eastern India, in particular, could face over ten days of heatwave-like conditions, posing serious challenges to public health and infrastructure.

Rising Temperatures India

The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves is being linked to the broader impacts of climate change. Authorities have urged the public to take precautions such as staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and keeping a watchful eye on vulnerable groups, including the elderly and children.

The rising temperatures also present serious risks for agriculture, water availability, and energy demand, all of which could strain public services and economic stability. As the country prepares for what could be one of its harshest summers in recent years, the focus is shifting toward long-term solutions and adaptation strategies to cope with a warming climate.

The IMD’s alert serves as a timely reminder of the escalating challenges posed by extreme weather and underscores the need for urgent climate resilience planning across India.
