IMD Warns Odisha Of Heavy Rain From Bay Of Bengal System

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of moderate to heavy rainfall in Odisha following the formation of a low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 to 48 hours, potentially affecting the coastal and interior districts of the state.

System May Intensify Further

The IMD bulletin noted that the system may deepen into a well-marked low-pressure or depression as it moves west-northwestwards. States along the east coast have been advised to stay alert, with coastal sea conditions likely to become rough. In Odisha, the agriculture and disaster-management authorities have started mobilising resources and issuing advisories for farmers and residents in vulnerable zones.

Districts On Alert

Districts such as Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and parts of the southern region are on alert for rainfall-induced water-logging, gusty winds and possible disruptions. Officials emphasised that while a full-blown cyclone has not yet been declared, even a depression or deep depression can trigger significant rainfall and local flooding.

Safety Measures Advised

Residents are urged to clear drains, avoid unnecessary travel and heed local warnings. Continuous monitoring by IMD and local authorities remains crucial as the weather system evolves over the next few days.
