IMD Issues Orange Alert for Chennai: Heavy Rains Expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai and nearby districts, including Kancheepuram, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 20 cm on October 15.

A yellow alert is in place for October 14 and 16, with rainfall expected between 6 cm and 12 cm.

Chennai Weather Alerts and Rainfall Forecast

According to IMD officials, the current weather system developing over the Bay of Bengal could lead to widespread rainfall across multiple districts in Tamil Nadu. Over the next 48 hours, Chennai and its surrounding areas may experience moderate rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning in some regions. Maximum temperatures are expected to be around 32°C-33°C, while minimum temperatures will hover around 25°C-26°C.

Two cyclonic circulations have formed—one over the south Tamil Nadu coast and another over the southwest Bay of Bengal. The latter system is predicted to develop into a low-pressure area, potentially leading to even heavier rainfall in the coming days.

Heavy Rains Expected in Key Districts

Heavy rain is anticipated across several districts, including Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet on October 14. On October 15, rainfall intensity may increase, with Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpet receiving the heaviest downpours. The rain is expected to continue on October 16, particularly in ghat areas such as Coimbatore, Nilgiris, and Erode.

Tamil Nadu Government’s Preparations

In response to the weather warnings, the Tamil Nadu government has established an integrated command centre to monitor the situation and coordinate flood relief efforts. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin announced that a 24/7 helpline, ‘1913’, has been activated, and citizens are encouraged to use the TN ALERT app for real-time updates.

With over 20 cm of rain forecasted in some areas, the government is prioritizing public safety. Around 13,000 volunteers and 100 motor pumps have been deployed to assist in flood relief efforts. Relief camps have also been set up across Chennai to accommodate those affected by the potential flooding.

Infrastructure and Flood Relief Measures

To mitigate the impact of the expected downpour, the government has ensured that 356 pumping stations are fully operational and equipped with backup generators. Additionally, super sucker and jet rodding machines are on standby to handle any drainage blockages.

This proactive approach, combined with the integrated command centre, aims to minimize disruption and protect lives and property as Chennai braces for heavy rains in the coming days.
