IIM Calcutta Student Granted Bail in Rape Case
A student from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta, accused of raping a 24-year-old woman on campus, was granted interim bail by a Kolkata sessions court on Saturday. The bail was approved against a bond of ₹50,000, including ₹25,000 in cash and a personal surety.
The accused, a second-year MBA student, had been arrested on July 12 and remanded to police custody. His release comes after nearly a week in judicial detention.
Delay in Statement Cited in Bail Order
The court based its decision on procedural delays, particularly the failure to record the survivor’s statement promptly. The woman reportedly did not appear before the magistrate on two separate occasions for her statement to be officially registered. While the prosecution objected to the bail, citing the gravity of the charges, the court noted that further delay could not justify extended custody without adherence to procedural requirements.
As part of his bail conditions, the accused must surrender his passport and must not leave West Bengal without prior court permission.
Allegations and Case Background
The case stems from an incident reported on July 11, when the survivor, a clinical psychologist, alleged she was drugged and raped inside a hostel room on the IIM campus. According to the complaint, the two met for a counselling session, after which she claimed to have been drugged. She reportedly discovered signs of sexual assault the following morning and filed an FIR at Haridevpur Police Station.
Following her complaint, the accused was arrested the same day and the matter gained attention for raising questions about safety on elite campuses.
Security Measures on Campus
IIM Calcutta has introduced new security protocols following the incident. More than 20 additional guards have been deployed around the women’s hostel, and strict entry restrictions have been imposed. Delivery personnel are no longer allowed near the hostel blocks and must leave parcels with security staff.
Investigation to Continue
The student will be required to cooperate with the investigation and reappear before the court as the trial progresses. The case has reignited conversations around gender safety, campus procedures, and due process, with legal experts emphasizing the importance of timely legal steps in sensitive cases.
