ICMR Licences Three Medical Technologies
The Indian Council of Medical Research has licensed three indigenously developed biomedical technologies to Emcure Pharmaceuticals and Biological E for further development and commercialisation. The technologies target cervical precancerous lesions, typhoid, paratyphoid and Shigella infections.
ICMR Licences Indigenous Medical Technologies
The agreements were facilitated through ICMR’s Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative, which connects publicly funded medical research with pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturers.
ICMR said the transfers are intended to accelerate the development of affordable healthcare products while strengthening India’s domestic biomedical research and manufacturing ecosystem. The companies will undertake further development, testing and regulatory processes before the technologies can be introduced commercially.
Emcure Gets Anti-HPV Therapeutic
Emcure Pharmaceuticals has received a licence for SHetA2, an experimental anti-HPV therapeutic intended to treat cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. The condition involves abnormal cell growth on the cervix and may progress to cervical cancer if untreated.
The technology was developed through a collaboration involving scientists from ICMR’s National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research and the University of Oklahoma Health Stephenson Cancer Center in the United States.
SHetA2 will require additional development and regulatory evaluation before becoming available for clinical use.
Biological E Licences Vaccine Candidates
Biological E has secured licences for two vaccine technologies developed by the ICMR-National Institute for Research in Bacterial Infections.
The first is a next-generation typhoid vaccine candidate based on a fusion construct. The second is a recombinant vaccine composition designed to offer protection against typhoid, paratyphoid and Shigella infections.
Both technologies remain candidates under development and are not yet commercially available vaccines. Biological E will be responsible for advancing them through manufacturing development, clinical studies and regulatory approval.
ICMR said such partnerships can help translate laboratory research into accessible products and reduce India’s dependence on imported medical technologies.
