IAF Rescues Two Foreign Mountaineers Stranded on Chaukhamba III in Uttarakhand
Two foreign mountaineers, stranded at a height of 6,015 meters while attempting to scale the Chaukhamba III peak in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, were successfully rescued on Sunday morning. The District Disaster Management Centre confirmed that Michelle Theresa Dvorak from the USA and Fav Jane Manners from the United Kingdom were airlifted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) after being stranded since October 3.
The rescue operation involved a Cheetah helicopter from the IAF, which airlifted the climbers from an altitude of 17,400 feet, demonstrating the high level of coordination between the Indian Air Force, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), and French mountaineers present at the site.
Rescue Operation Amid Challenging Conditions
The rescue mission faced significant challenges due to extreme weather conditions over the past two days. Despite inclement weather, the joint efforts of the rescue teams ensured the safe extraction of the mountaineers, who were caught in the harsh environment of the Chaukhamba III peak.
The IAF’s successful rescue operation is a testament to their resilience and skill in handling complex rescue missions. The climbers were provided with necessary medical assistance and are reported to be in stable condition.
