IAF Chief Stresses Self-Reliance Amid China’s Jet Advances
Air Chief Marshal A P Singh has emphasized the urgent need for India to achieve self-reliance in defense production, particularly as neighboring China continues to advance its military capabilities. Speaking at the annual Subroto Mukherjee seminar, he pointed to China’s unveiling of its new stealth fighter jets as a significant challenge to India’s security landscape.
China’s Rapid Military Modernization
China recently conducted the maiden flights of two new-generation stealth fighter jets, signaling rapid progress in its military technology. These tailless, stealthy aircraft, believed to be sixth-generation fighters, have drawn global attention and even taken more advanced nations by surprise. China’s fifth-generation Chengdu J-20 fighters are already stationed in airfields near India, such as Hotan and Shigatse, further increasing regional tensions.
India’s Development Goals
India is pushing forward with plans to develop its own advanced fighter jets. The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), India’s ambitious fifth-generation fighter program, has been allocated a budget exceeding ₹15,000 crore. The first prototype is expected to take flight within the next four to five years, with production slated for post-2035.
Despite these efforts, delays in acquiring critical components, such as jet engines for the Tejas Mark-1A fighters, have slowed progress. With only 30 operational squadrons compared to an authorized strength of 42.5, the Indian Air Force plans to induct 180 Tejas Mark-1A and 108 Mark-2 fighters to bridge the gap.
A Call for Private Sector Involvement
The Air Chief stressed the importance of private sector participation in accelerating defense production. While acknowledging the higher costs associated with self-reliance, he called it essential for safeguarding national security. He also highlighted the growing militarization along India’s borders, particularly with China and Pakistan, as a pressing concern.
The IAF Chief’s remarks underline the strategic imperative for India to strengthen its indigenous defense capabilities to address regional threats effectively.
