Hyundai Targets 8% Export Growth, Eyes Chennai as Global Hub

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has announced its target to achieve 8% growth in exports in 2025. The South Korean automotive giant is aiming to build on the strong foundation it has established in India, with a renewed focus on expanding its overseas shipments from the country. This push comes as part of Hyundai’s broader strategy to make India a central pillar of its global supply chain, particularly as demand from emerging markets and Europe continues to grow.

Chennai to Become Hyundai’s Largest Global Base

At the heart of this growth plan is Hyundai’s manufacturing base in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The company is positioning its Indian facilities as the largest global production hub outside South Korea. Hyundai already operates two major production units in Irungattukottai and Sriperumbudur, which together roll out nearly 7 lakh cars annually. These plants serve not only the domestic market but also over 85 export destinations across Africa, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific.

Strategic Advantage of Chennai as a Manufacturing and Export Hub

Often dubbed the “Detroit of Asia”, Chennai accounts for nearly 30% of India’s automobile manufacturing and 35% of its auto components industry. Hyundai benefits significantly from Chennai’s strong port infrastructure, including Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port, and the emerging Kattupalli Port, making vehicle exports faster and more cost-efficient. The city’s well-developed ecosystem of auto suppliers and skilled labor also supports Hyundai’s long-term expansion.

Investment in EVs and Future Growth

Hyundai is also investing heavily in future technologies and sustainability, including electric vehicles (EVs). The company intends to produce EVs at scale from its Indian facilities in line with global emission targets and India’s push for cleaner mobility. This step will not only add to export volumes but also integrate India into Hyundai’s global EV roadmap. With these developments, Hyundai is reinforcing Chennai’s importance not just in combustion engine vehicle production but also in next-gen mobility solutions.
