Hypermarket Fire in Iraq Kills 60
Baghdad/al-Kut, 17 July 2025: A massive fire broke out at a five-storey hypermarket in the eastern Iraqi city of al-Kut late Wednesday night, resulting in the death of at least 60 people and leaving 11 others missing. The blaze, which began during peak shopping hours, quickly engulfed the building, trapping customers and staff inside.
Local officials confirmed that 45 people were rescued from the site. Many of the injured are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation. One victim’s body was severely charred and has not yet been identified. Emergency teams are continuing search operations as several individuals are still feared to be under the debris.
Cause Under Investigation
Authorities have launched an official investigation into the cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest possible violations of fire safety norms. The Wasit provincial governor has called for a detailed inquiry, with findings expected within 48 hours. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the building owners and the mall’s management.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos, with smoke quickly spreading through the upper floors. Several people jumped from windows in an attempt to escape, while firefighters worked through the night to control the flames and clear the rubble.
National Mourning Declared
In response to the tragedy, the Iraqi Prime Minister has declared three days of national mourning. Public outrage is growing over the lack of fire safety enforcement in commercial buildings, with citizens demanding stricter regulations and accountability.
This is one of the deadliest commercial building fires in recent years in Iraq, raising fresh concerns over public infrastructure safety in urban areas.
