Hyderabad Court Protects Chiranjeevi’s Identity Rights
A Hyderabad city civil court has granted interim protection to actor Chiranjeevi’s personality and publicity rights. The order prevents more than 30 online platforms, including e-commerce sites and YouTube channels, from using his name, image, likeness or voice without prior consent. This also extends to AI-generated or cloned formats.
Court’s Observations
In its ruling dated September 26, the court said Chiranjeevi’s identity—including his image, voice, and public persona—forms a significant part of his reputation and commercial value. It noted that misuse of these elements could cause irreparable damage to the actor, and monetary compensation would not be an adequate remedy.
Broader Implications
The case underscores the growing importance of personality rights in the digital era, especially as AI-based imitation and metaverse platforms expand. The order signals judicial recognition of such risks and highlights the need for platforms to respect celebrity identity rights. The matter will be heard further later this month.
