Hurricane Milton to Hit Florida as Catastrophic Category 5
Hurricane Milton, a powerful Category 5 storm, is barreling toward Florida’s Gulf Coast, prompting urgent warnings and mandatory evacuations. The monster storm, packing maximum sustained winds of 165 miles per hour, is expected to bring life-threatening conditions to parts of Florida by Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Milton Expected to Make Landfall Midweek
As of 11 p.m. ET on Monday, Hurricane Milton was moving at a speed of 9 miles per hour over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, near the northern coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The storm’s wind speeds had surged past 175 mph earlier on Monday, far exceeding the threshold for a Category 5 hurricane, which is set at 157 mph. In just 48 hours, Milton’s wind speeds more than doubled, raising concerns of a potentially catastrophic impact.
Forecasters predict that Milton will hit Florida’s western Gulf Coast as a major hurricane by late Wednesday. Though the storm is expected to weaken slightly before making landfall, its projected intensity remains a cause for alarm.
“Milton is a potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale,” the National Hurricane Center stated in its latest advisory. While fluctuations in strength are possible, Milton is expected to remain an extremely dangerous storm through its landfall in Florida.
Evacuation Orders Issued for Tampa Bay Area
In preparation for Milton’s anticipated impact, mandatory evacuation orders were issued for parts of Tampa on Monday afternoon, with evacuations scheduled to take effect at 2:30 p.m. Hillsborough County officials, which oversee the Tampa Bay area, have set up nine shelters throughout the county for residents in mandatory evacuation zones. These shelters are also available for individuals whose homes are vulnerable to storm surge, flooding, and wind damage.
The threat of Hurricane Milton comes just weeks after Hurricane Helene hit Florida’s Gulf Coast, compounding the region’s vulnerability to severe weather events. Emergency management teams are urging residents to heed evacuation orders and prepare for potentially devastating conditions.
