Hiring Slows as India IT Firms Trim Headcount
India’s leading IT services companies have reported a significant slowdown in hiring during the first nine months of the 2025-26 financial year. Net headcount across major firms in the sector declined sharply compared with the same period last year as companies exercised hiring restraint and restructured workforces amid changing demand patterns and technological shifts.
Hiring Trends and Headcount Changes
While some companies continued to add staff, overall net hiring was subdued, with a marked drop from a year earlier. One of the largest IT employers saw a notable reduction in its workforce, which offset gains seen at other firms. Other major players reported modest employee additions, but the overall industry trend points to cautious recruitment, particularly for traditional roles.
Technology and Skills Focus
IT companies are increasingly prioritising specialised skills, especially in areas such as artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies. Recruitments are becoming more targeted, with higher demand for talent that can support new digital solutions and advanced services. Firms are also adjusting to weak discretionary spending by clients and global economic uncertainties.
Outlook for Jobs
Industry experts say that while near-term hiring remains muted, demand for specialised technology roles could support selective growth. The broader job market may continue to evolve as companies balance automation, productivity gains and workforce scalability.
