High US Tariffs Will Hurt Exports – Shashi Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor warned that Indian exporters could struggle to compete in the United States market if total import duties rise to 75% under recent US tariff policies announced by President Donald Trump. He said such high tariffs would make Indian goods unviable in the American market.

Tariff Escalation Explained

Tharoor noted that an initial 25% duty had already been imposed on Indian products and that further tariffs tied to geopolitically linked measures could push total duties much higher. He said at very high tariff levels, Indian exporters would find it difficult to maintain competitiveness compared with countries facing lower duties.

Call For Fair Trade Deal

Tharoor called for a balanced bilateral trade agreement between India and the US to reduce tariff barriers and protect exporters. He said lowering tariffs closer to those seen in agreements with other partners would make trade more sustainable and support long-term economic cooperation.

Economic Impact

Trade experts say sharply higher duties could hit sectors such as gems, textiles and seafood that depend heavily on the US market, and could prompt exporters to look for alternative markets or push for faster negotiation of a trade pact.
