Heavy Snowfall in Japan Kills Dozens

Severe snowfall across northern and western Japan has killed at least 30 people, authorities said, as extreme winter conditions continued to disrupt daily life and transport. The deaths were reported over the past two weeks in areas along the Sea of Japan coast, where snowfall has been far above seasonal averages.

Accidents During Snow Clearing

Officials said many fatalities were caused by snow-related accidents, including people falling from rooftops while clearing snow, being buried by falling snow, or getting trapped by collapsing drifts. Hundreds of others have been injured in similar incidents. Some regions reported snow depths exceeding four metres, overwhelming local infrastructure.

Emergency Response and Warnings

The Japanese government deployed self-defence forces and emergency teams to assist with snow removal, rescue operations, and aid to isolated communities. Authorities have warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel and take precautions during snow-clearing work, citing ongoing risks of avalanches and road accidents.

Weather officials said further snowfall is expected in several prefectures, and advisories remain in place as winter conditions persist.
