Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued for Coastal Maharashtra

As the southwest monsoon gains intensity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rainfall warnings across Maharashtra, particularly for the Konkan coast and interior districts. The alerts come amid reports of significant waterlogging and commuter disruption in urban centres like Pune and Mumbai.

IMD Issues Red and Orange Alerts

A red alert has been declared for Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall in these areas. An orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, with forecasts warning of strong winds, thunder, and lightning through the weekend. Residents in these areas are advised to remain indoors during intense spells and avoid flood-prone zones.

Pune Sees Urban Flooding, Traffic Chaos

Several parts of Pune, including Shivajinagar, Chinchwad, Lohegaon, Magarpatta, and Bhosari, recorded between 40 to 55 mm of rain within a few hours. This caused waterlogging on major roads and severe traffic snarls during the evening rush hour. Emergency teams have been deployed to clear drains and remove fallen trees from key intersections. Commuters are urged to plan alternative routes and expect delays.

Mumbai and Konkan Coast Prepare for Heavy Showers

Mumbai and surrounding regions are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours. Coastal flooding, power outages, and tree falls remain probable in low-lying areas. The IMD has also advised fishermen along the Konkan coastline not to venture into rough seas due to strong currents and high waves.
