Heartfelt Gratitude to the Narendra Modi-Led Indian Government – Sheikh Hasina’s Son

Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has publicly expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Narendra Modi-led Indian government, alleging it “saved my mother’s life” amid threats in Bangladesh. He stated that if his mother had not relocated to India during the 2024 pro-democracy uprising, militants had planned to kill her. He described India as having “always been a good friend.”

Allegations of Unfair Trial and Extradition Issues

Wazed went on to allege that the legal process in Bangladesh lacked legitimacy. He claimed Sheikh Hasina was not allowed to engage her preferred defence attorneys, and that judicial appointments were made before her trial, raising questions about due process. Given these concerns, he argued that New Delhi is justified in rejecting any extradition request from Dhaka, calling the laws “amended illegally” and the trial mechanisms politically influenced.

Diplomatic and Regional Implications

The remarks by Wazed come at a time when Bangladesh’s interim government has urged India to extradite Sheikh Hasina, who remains in India following her government’s collapse in August 2024. India has responded by stating that it remains committed to Bangladesh’s security and stability, but emphasised that any extradition must follow due process and respect legal and constitutional norms. Wazed’s statements reinforce India’s position on judicial fairness and highlight the sensitive diplomatic balance between the neighbouring nations.
