H-1B Approvals for Indian IT Firms Hit 10-Year Low

New H-1B visa approvals for Indian IT companies have fallen sharply, dropping to 4,573 in FY 2025 — the lowest level recorded in a decade. The figure marks a steep decline compared to both 2024 and earlier years, signalling a major shift in U.S. visa patterns affecting Indian tech firms.

U.S. Tech Companies Dominate New Approvals

Only Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) featured among the top employers receiving new H-1B approvals. The remaining top positions were taken by U.S. technology giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Google. The data reflects a growing reliance on in-house hiring by American companies instead of outsourcing roles to Indian IT service providers.

Why the Drop Is Happening

Industry observers say multiple factors contributed to the decline, including increased remote-work adoption by Indian IT firms, stricter U.S. immigration scrutiny, higher visa expenses and changing client demand. More U.S. companies are also filing direct petitions for specialised tech roles, reducing dependence on outsourcing giants.

Impact on Indian IT Talent

The fall in fresh H-1B approvals could affect the overseas mobility of Indian tech professionals. Experts believe companies may shift towards strengthening India-based delivery centres or rely more heavily on existing overseas staff to meet project requirements.
