Gukesh Credits Anand for His Championship Revival
Newly crowned World Chess Champion D. Gukesh admitted that overconfidence cost him the opening game of his 2024 title match against Ding Liren. Speaking on the Quest Talk podcast, the 18-year-old acknowledged that his mindset backfired early, nearly derailing his historic campaign.
Anand’s Timely Pep Talk
Gukesh said that former world champion Viswanathan Anand helped him regain composure. In an unexpected elevator encounter, Anand told him: “I had 11 games to come back. You have 13.” That encouragement, Gukesh revealed, served as a vital mental reset.
Comeback to Victory
After his poor start, Gukesh turned the match around. In the 14-game classical match held in Singapore from November 25 to December 12, 2024, Gukesh edged Ding Liren 7.5–6.5 to become the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion. At 18 years and 195 days, he broke the previous record for the youngest ever to hold the crown.
Rising Star on Firm Mental Footing
The revelation spotlights the pivotal role of mental strength and mentorship at elite levels. Gukesh’s performance—fuelled by Anand’s words—highlighted his resilience that carried him to the title.
