GST Reforms Must Safeguard State Revenues, Says Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin cautioned that Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms cannot genuinely benefit the public unless they protect states’ revenues. He stressed that financial security for states is essential even as the Centre moves ahead with rate rationalisation.

States Unite Ahead Of Council Meet

Stalin’s remarks came as eight opposition-ruled states—including Tamil Nadu—are preparing a unified demand ahead of the GST Council meeting scheduled in early September. These states are seeking compensation mechanisms to offset revenue losses from proposed GST cuts.

Federal Concerns Underlined

Stalin’s position reflects a broader concern over federalism. He has also previously accused the Centre of unfair resource allocation to Tamil Nadu, arguing that strong states are necessary for a strong union.
