Greenland Leaders Reject US Takeover Remarks
Political leaders in Greenland have firmly rejected recent remarks by US President Donald Trump suggesting that the United States could take control of the island. Leaders across Greenland’s political spectrum said the people of Greenland do not want to become Americans and stressed that their future must be decided by Greenlanders alone.
Greenland is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with authority over most domestic matters. Its leaders said any discussion about changing the island’s status without the consent of its people is unacceptable and undermines principles of self-determination.
Stand on Sovereignty and Self-Rule
In a joint response, Greenlandic politicians said external pressure or threats would not influence their democratic choices. They reiterated that Greenland’s political path, including debates on greater autonomy or independence, is an internal matter and not open to negotiation by outside powers.
The comments came amid renewed focus on Greenland’s strategic importance in the Arctic, as global powers compete for influence over shipping routes, security interests, and natural resources in the region.
Regional and Diplomatic Context
Denmark has backed Greenland’s position, emphasising respect for sovereignty and international law. Greenlandic leaders said cooperation with allies is welcome, but any attempt to impose control would be strongly opposed.
