Governor RN Ravi Criticizes Tamil Nadu’s Language Policy
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi has raised concerns over the state’s two-language policy, arguing that it restricts educational and employment opportunities for students. He also accused certain groups of attempting to create societal divisions based on language and regional identity.
Governor’s Concerns Over Language Policy
Speaking at a public event, Governor Ravi stated that students in Tamil Nadu are “unfortunately not free to choose the language they wish to study” and are “compelled not to study other Indian languages.” He alleged that some forces are spreading misinformation by claiming that certain languages are being imposed, when, in reality, “no one is imposing any language on anyone.”
He further claimed that opposition to learning additional Indian languages has hindered Tamil Nadu’s youth in competing with students from other states, affecting their academic and professional prospects.
Criticism of Regional Development Policies
Governor Ravi also expressed his concerns about the state’s approach to regional development, particularly in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. He described the region as feeling like a “neglected backyard” despite its rich human and natural resources. Additionally, he pointed to issues such as rising substance abuse among youth and suggested that the language policy had contributed to a sense of deprivation in the region.
Advocacy for the National Education Policy
The Governor reiterated his support for implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Tamil Nadu. He argued that the rigid two-language system places Tamil Nadu’s students at a disadvantage compared to their peers in neighboring states, particularly in sectors requiring multilingual proficiency. He emphasized that a more flexible approach to language learning would provide students with better academic and employment opportunities.
State Government’s Response
Governor Ravi’s remarks have drawn strong criticism from the ruling party. Tamil Nadu’s Law Minister responded by rejecting the Governor’s claims, stating that the two-language policy has played a key role in the state’s educational and economic success. He also accused the Governor of repeatedly making statements that undermine Tamil Nadu’s cultural and linguistic identity.
The debate over Tamil Nadu’s language policy continues to be a contentious issue, with political leaders and education experts weighing in on its long-term impact on the state’s students and workforce.
