Government to Launch ‘Sahkar Taxi’ Cooperative Ride-Hailing Service

The Indian government is set to launch ‘Sahkar Taxi’, a new cooperative-based ride-hailing service aimed at reshaping the transportation sector by prioritizing driver welfare and eliminating intermediary commissions. The initiative is positioned as a driver-centric alternative to existing commercial platforms and is intended to empower individuals through the cooperative model.

Direct Earnings for Drivers

In contrast to current ride-hailing giants, where drivers often lose a significant portion of their income to platform commissions, the ‘Sahkar Taxi’ model will ensure that profits go directly to the drivers. By doing so, the government aims to enhance their financial autonomy and improve their overall working conditions. The cooperative structure will give drivers collective ownership, ensuring they have a say in how the platform is operated and managed.

Diverse Transportation Options

The proposed service will offer multi-modal transport options, including two-wheeler taxis, auto-rickshaws, and four-wheelers. This variety is expected to make the platform accessible to a wider audience while also catering to diverse commuting needs across urban and semi-urban regions. By integrating different forms of transport, the service seeks to promote convenience and inclusivity for passengers.

Part of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ Mission

‘Sahkar Taxi’ is in line with the broader vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation), which focuses on leveraging the cooperative movement to create employment opportunities, strengthen rural and urban economies, and ensure equitable growth. This vision reflects the government’s strategy to use cooperative models not just in agriculture and housing, but now in mobility and public services.

The upcoming launch is expected to intensify competition in the ride-hailing sector, offering both passengers and drivers an alternative model that emphasizes transparency, fair pricing, and shared prosperity.
