Government to Develop 50 New Airports in Next 5 Years: Civil Aviation Minister
The Indian government plans to develop 50 new airports over the next five years as part of a broader effort to enhance the country’s aviation infrastructure.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced this ambitious goal during the inauguration of the Airbus India and South Asia Headquarters – Training Centre in New Delhi on Thursday.
The minister emphasized the need to expand the airport ecosystem, which will not only enhance commercial activities but also significantly boost job creation across the country. Over the last decade, the number of airports in India has doubled, reaching 157. The government now aims to add 50 more by 2029 and expand to 200 additional airports over the next 20 years.
Expanding India’s Airport Ecosystem
Minister Naidu underscored the importance of building more airports to accommodate the growing demand for air travel in India. Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam echoed this sentiment, noting that air passenger traffic is expected to double within the next five years, surpassing the 220 million passengers recorded last year.
The rapid expansion of India’s aviation sector is set to play a pivotal role in the country’s economic growth, providing significant employment opportunities and improving connectivity nationwide.
