Government Signs ₹6,900 Crore Defence Contracts with Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has entered into significant agreements totaling ₹6,900 crore with Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited. These contracts aim to enhance India’s artillery capabilities and military mobility.
Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS)
Bharat Forge, emerging as the lowest bidder, will manufacture 60% of the 155mm/52 calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS), while Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will produce the remaining 40%. Developed collaboratively by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bharat Forge, and TASL, the ATAGS boasts a range exceeding 40 kilometers and features advanced fire control and automated loading systems.
High Mobility Gun Towing Vehicles
In addition to the artillery systems, the contracts include the procurement of High Mobility Gun Towing Vehicles (HMV) 6×6, enhancing the mobility and operational efficiency of artillery units.
Indigenous Manufacturing and Technological Advancements
Over 65% of the components for the ATAGS are sourced domestically, including critical subsystems such as the barrel, muzzle brake, breech mechanism, firing and recoil system, and ammunition handling mechanism. This emphasis on indigenous manufacturing aligns with India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, aiming to bolster self-reliance in defense production.
Strategic Importance
These agreements are pivotal in modernizing the Indian Army’s artillery and mobility capabilities, ensuring enhanced operational readiness and strategic advantage. The collaboration with private sector entities like Bharat Forge and TASL underscores the growing role of indigenous defense manufacturing in strengthening national security.
