Government Implements Third OROP Revision, Clears ₹6,600 Crore Arrears

The Central Government has implemented the third revision of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme, bringing financial relief to over 25 lakh defense veterans and family pensioners. This development underscores the government’s commitment to supporting retired armed forces personnel and their families.

Key Highlights of the OROP Revision

  • Beneficiaries: Approximately 25 lakh individuals, including 4.52 lakh new beneficiaries, will gain from this revision. The initiative covers retired defense personnel and family pensioners.
  • Financial Outlay: Arrears amounting to ₹6,600 crore have been cleared as part of the revision.
  • Pension Increase: The latest revision, effective from July 1, 2019, ensures that pension amounts are aligned with the average of the minimum and maximum pension drawn by retirees in the same rank with the same length of service.

The OROP scheme was first implemented in 2015, aimed at addressing long-standing disparities in pensions across ranks and service durations. This third revision follows through on the government’s periodic review commitment every five years.

Distribution of Arrears

According to the Ministry of Defence, the arrears are being disbursed in four installments. However, family pensioners, recipients of gallantry awards, and senior pensioners aged 70 and above will receive the entire amount in a single installment.

An MoD spokesperson stated, “This revision ensures financial stability and dignity for our defense personnel who have selflessly served the nation.”

A Commitment to Veterans

The OROP scheme reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to honor and support the armed forces. The revisions address key disparities and provide a much-needed financial boost to beneficiaries, particularly at a time when economic stability is vital for retired personnel and their families.

Future Outlook

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling the promises made under OROP. Regular revisions and timely disbursements aim to strengthen the welfare framework for veterans and their dependents, ensuring sustained support for those who have dedicated their lives to the nation’s service.

This step highlights the government’s acknowledgment of the sacrifices made by defense personnel and its resolve to provide them with equitable benefits post-retirement.
