Government extends Anil Chauhan’s CDS tenure to May 2026

The Government of India has extended General Anil Chauhan’s tenure as Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Secretary, Department of Military Affairs until May 30, 2026, or until further orders. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) cleared the proposal on September 24, 2025. The move ensures continuity in leadership at a time when the Indian military is undergoing major reforms.

Age Limit and Service Rules

General Chauhan, born on May 18, 1961, will complete 65 years of age in May 2026, which is the maximum age limit for the post. He was appointed as CDS on September 28, 2022, after being brought back from retirement under revised rules that allowed retired officers to be eligible. His appointment had filled a crucial gap after the post remained vacant for nearly nine months.

Focus on Defence Reforms

During his tenure, General Chauhan has focused on long-pending defence reforms, including the creation of integrated theatre commands, better coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and modernization of the armed forces. The Ministry of Defence emphasized that the extension reflects the government’s confidence in his leadership to guide the military through these transformative changes.
