Government Cuts IndiGo Flights After Cancellation Crisis

The Civil Aviation Ministry has decided to reduce IndiGo’s winter flight schedule after days of disruptions caused major inconvenience to travellers. The airline cancelled a large number of flights over the past week, leading to long queues, delays and stranded passengers at several airports.

Slots to be reassigned

Officials said flight slots removed from IndiGo will be reassigned to other airlines to maintain connectivity and reduce the burden on passengers. The decision aims to stabilise operations during the busy season, ensuring that critical routes remain accessible even if one carrier is unable to operate consistently.

Refunds issued

IndiGo has refunded a significant amount to passengers whose travel plans were affected. The airline attributed the cancellations to a combination of issues, including new rest norms for pilots, staff shortages and operational strain. The government said it expects airlines to improve planning and avoid large-scale disruption in future.

Inquiry ordered

A high-level inquiry has been initiated to examine the reasons behind the cancellations and determine whether better contingency measures could have prevented the crisis. The ministry said it will continue monitoring IndiGo’s performance and may take additional steps if problems persist.

Impact on passengers

Travellers reported waiting for hours without clear information. The sudden cancellations resulted in missed connections and last-minute changes in travel plans. Authorities said efforts are underway to improve communication to passengers and ensure support is available at airports.
