Government Blocks 7,393 Film Piracy Links
The Union government has directed digital platforms and internet intermediaries to block 7,393 online links associated with film piracy. The action includes thousands of Telegram channels and websites accused of distributing copyrighted films, web series and other audiovisual content without permission.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry told the Lok Sabha that blocking orders covered 4,996 Telegram channels and 1,263 piracy websites. The remaining actions involved other online links used to host or circulate unauthorised copies of copyrighted content.
Online intermediaries were instructed to remove or disable access to the identified material. The crackdown followed complaints and monitoring by copyright holders, film producers and over-the-top streaming platforms affected by illegal distribution.
Telegram Piracy Channels Targeted
Telegram has emerged as a major focus of enforcement because its large file-sharing capacity and channel-based distribution can enable pirated films and series to reach substantial audiences quickly.
In March 2026, the government directed Telegram to disable more than 3,100 channels following complaints from streaming platforms and content owners. Authorities later expanded enforcement as additional piracy networks and links were identified.
Platforms failing to comply with valid removal orders may risk losing legal protection available to intermediaries for user-generated content.
India Strengthens Anti-Piracy Laws
The Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023 strengthened penalties against unauthorised recording and transmission of films. Violations can attract imprisonment ranging from three months to three years, along with financial penalties linked to a film’s production cost.
The government can also direct online intermediaries and internet service providers to remove or restrict access to pirated material. Officials said these measures are intended to protect filmmakers, producers, streaming platforms and other copyright owners from financial losses caused by illegal distribution.
