Government Bars PNG Users From Retaining LPG Cylinders
The Union government has amended gas supply rules to prevent households with piped natural gas (PNG) connections from retaining or refilling domestic LPG cylinders. The move is aimed at streamlining cooking gas distribution and ensuring that LPG supplies are prioritised for households that do not have access to piped gas networks.
Government Bars PNG Users From LPG Connections
Under the amended supply order issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, consumers who already have piped natural gas connections will not be allowed to retain, obtain, or refill domestic LPG cylinders. Oil marketing companies have also been directed not to provide LPG connections or refill services to households that are already connected to PNG networks.
Officials said the measure is designed to prevent duplication in cooking fuel usage and improve the availability of LPG cylinders for households that depend solely on LPG for cooking.
LPG Supply Management Behind Policy Move
India relies heavily on imports to meet its domestic LPG demand, making supply vulnerable to disruptions in global shipping routes and international energy markets. Authorities have been closely monitoring LPG availability as global developments have created pressure on supply chains and fuel shipments.
By restricting households with PNG connections from maintaining LPG cylinders, the government aims to optimise the allocation of LPG supplies and ensure adequate availability for rural and semi-urban consumers who lack piped gas access.
Push For Expansion Of PNG Usage
The decision also aligns with the government’s broader push to expand piped natural gas usage in cities through city gas distribution networks. PNG is considered a more stable and continuous supply option because it is delivered through pipelines rather than cylinders.
As gas infrastructure expands across urban areas, authorities expect more households to transition to piped gas systems, which could gradually reduce pressure on LPG cylinder distribution networks across the country.
