Google Plans $10 B Data Hub in Visakhapatnam
Google is reportedly preparing to invest USD 10 billion in India to develop a 1 gigawatt data centre cluster in Visakhapatnam, marking one of its largest proposed commitments in the country. The project would establish three campuses in villages near the city — Adavivaram, Tarluvada (Visakhapatnam district), and Rambilli (in Anakapalli district).
Project Scope and Timeline
The data centre cluster is expected to go live by July 2028, with construction involving submarine cable landings, metro fibre networks, power infrastructure, and supporting telecom connectivity. Local reports indicate a formal agreement may be signed in New Delhi on October 14 between Google and Andhra Pradesh’s IT minister.
Strategic Importance
If it proceeds as planned, this will be Google’s first such large-scale data centre investment in India and could become Asia’s largest data centre cluster. The move aligns with India’s expanding digital infrastructure needs and supports the vision of a dedicated AI and cloud ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh.
Challenges Ahead
Land acquisition is already facing legal hurdles. The state government has allocated nearly 200 acres in Tarluvada for the campus, but court cases have delayed formal transfers. Compensation rates have been contested, and some claimants have sought greater clarity and fairness in the process.
As one of India’s fastest-growing data centre markets, the region’s success will depend on regulatory support, energy availability, and infrastructure execution. Google’s investment, if realized, would signal strong confidence in India’s role as a digital infrastructure hub.
