Google Lays Off 200+ Contractors behind Gemini AI

Google has terminated more than 200 contractors who worked on its Gemini chatbot and AI Overviews feature. The trimmed workforce were employees of outsourcing firm GlobalLogic and its subcontractors—not directly on Google’s payroll.

Roles & Cost

The laid-off contractors were part of a group known as “super raters.” Many had advanced degrees and were responsible for evaluating, rewriting, and refining AI-generated text so it appeared natural, correct, and clear.

Worker Complaints

Workers allege the layoffs followed attempts to push for better pay and working conditions, including unionisation. Some say they received little notice, had tight performance metrics, and low benefits. At least two have filed complaints with U.S. labor authorities.

Automation Concerns

Some affected workers fear that automated systems, possibly trained by their own feedback, could be replacing their roles. Others expressed concerns about being disconnected without warning.
