Goa Nightclub Owners Flee After Fire Kills 25

A late-night fire at a popular restaurant-cum-nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, claimed 25 lives over the weekend. The incident took place at Birch by Romeo Lane, where the blaze spread rapidly through the building. Most of the victims were staff working inside, along with a number of visitors who were unable to escape in time. Investigators believe the fire escalated because of inadequate safety measures and blocked exits, though the exact cause is still under examination.

Owners leave India hours after the fire

Police confirmed that the club’s owners, brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, left India within hours of the incident. They boarded an international flight and reached Thailand early the following morning. A lookout notice has been issued against them, and authorities have initiated coordination with international agencies for further action. Several staff members and operational managers connected to the club have already been detained as part of the probe.

Investigations and official action

An FIR has been registered under sections related to negligent conduct and endangering life. The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry and directed a complete inspection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs operating in the region. Initial findings suggest the establishment did not comply with key fire-safety norms, prompting the closure of other properties linked to the same group.

Public anger and safety concerns

Families of the deceased have demanded accountability, while survivors described chaotic escape attempts as smoke filled the building. The tragedy has revived concerns about safety standards in entertainment venues across tourist areas in Goa, where enforcement often lags behind rapid commercial expansion. Officials say all similar venues will now face stricter checks to prevent a repeat of the disaster.
