Global South Must Speak In One Voice On Trade: Goyal

India has urged developing and least-developed countries to adopt a unified stance in global trade discussions. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made the appeal during the 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva.

Challenges In Trade

Goyal highlighted that the global trade system faces a “trust deficit,” with developing countries burdened by tariff and non-tariff barriers, unilateral environmental measures, and shifting rules of origin. He stressed that the principle of “special and differential treatment,” once a safeguard for emerging economies, is being diluted in present trade frameworks.

Strategic Importance

The minister said the Global South must speak in one voice to protect its collective interests. He added that coordinated action would help amplify the negotiating strength of poorer nations in trade talks, especially as supply-chain disruptions and protectionist policies reshape global commerce.
