Gill Appointed India’s New ODI Captain
Shubman Gill has been named India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. The move comes ahead of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series in Australia beginning October 19, 2025.
Squad and Roles
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been retained in the ODI squad despite the captaincy change. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain. Gill is already India’s Test captain and has been elevated to lead in the 50-over format as well.
Reason for Switch
Selectors explained that the change is part of a long-term plan aimed at giving the new captain sufficient time to settle before the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit will continue contributing as a senior player without captaincy duties.
Legacy and Expectations
Rohit Sharma led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42 of them. His captaincy era included leading India to multiple ICC finals and a Champions Trophy victory. Many cricket figures have praised his leadership and strategising capabilities.
Moving forward, Gill faces the challenge of managing senior players while steering the team through transitions. The decision signals India’s effort to groom a younger leadership core for future tournaments.
