Gig Workers’ Union Welcomes Government Move on Delivery Safety

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU) and allied organisations have welcomed the Union government’s intervention to improve working conditions for gig delivery workers, particularly by curbing unsafe delivery time commitments. Unions said the move could reduce pressure on riders and enhance road safety.

Government Action on Delivery Timelines

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya spoke with major delivery platforms, urging them to stop advertising rigid 10-minute delivery promises that unions and workers say encourage unsafe behaviour and excessive work pressure. Following these talks, some companies have revised or removed the strict delivery timeline from their branding and advertisements, a step seen by workers as a positive start toward safer working conditions for platform riders.

Union Response and Worker Concerns

Union leaders said the intervention is a significant step toward protecting gig workers’ lives and dignity, stressing that unrealistic delivery targets previously led to unsafe riding practices, stress and hazardous conditions. The unions have also called for broader reforms, including fairer pay, social security benefits and consultation with worker representatives in policy decisions that affect their livelihoods.
