Germany Pushes for Deeper Security Ties With India

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany wants to expand security and defence cooperation with India, signalling a push to help New Delhi diversify away from its long-standing reliance on Russia for military equipment and energy supplies. The remarks were made during Merz’s official visit to India, where he held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Focus on Defence and Strategic Cooperation

Merz said closer collaboration in defence technology, security cooperation, and supply chains would benefit both countries and strengthen strategic trust. He noted that deeper engagement could support India’s efforts to broaden its defence partnerships and reduce vulnerabilities linked to dependence on a single supplier.

Indian officials reiterated that India remains open to expanding defence and security ties with Germany, while continuing to follow an independent foreign and security policy. Discussions also covered cooperation in emerging technologies, critical infrastructure protection, and global security challenges.

Wider Strategic Context

India continues to maintain defence and energy ties with Russia, even as it deepens engagement with Western partners. Germany’s outreach reflects its broader aim to strengthen partnerships in the Indo-Pacific and align with India on security and geopolitical issues.
