Germany Accelerates Military Purchase Approvals for India
Germany has granted India a special status aimed at accelerating military purchase approvals, a move that marks a significant shift in defense collaboration between the two nations.
German Ambassador Philipp Ackermann revealed this on Wednesday, noting that this status would expedite the process for deals like the P-75I submarine project, which is currently awaiting a decision from the Indian government.
P-75I Submarine Deal Under Consideration
The P-75I project, a multi-billion dollar deal valued at over ₹43,000 crore, aims to equip the Indian Navy with six advanced conventional submarines. Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Spain’s Navantia are in the running to secure the contract. Both contenders have completed field evaluation trials, and their bids are currently being assessed for technical compliance.
Germany’s special status for India is expected to fast-track approval processes, with Ackermann stating that the German government is “very supportive” of the deal. However, the decision now rests with the Indian government.
Germany Simplifies Military Equipment Licensing for India
In addition to the P-75I deal, Germany has also simplified its licensing requirements for the sale of military equipment to India under its Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control. This includes a recent grant of a small arms license to India, indicating growing defense ties between the two nations.
Advanced Submarine Technology on Offer
TKMS has partnered with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) to offer a design based on its successful Class 214 and Class 212CD submarines. Meanwhile, Navantia has tied up with Larsen & Toubro, offering a submarine design based on its S80 class, which was recently commissioned into the Spanish Navy.
A key requirement for the P-75I project is the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, which enhances a submarine’s endurance. While Germany’s AIP is operationally proven, Navantia’s AIP is still in the process of being tested in submerged operations.
Germany’s decision to grant India special status for military purchases underscores the importance of defense cooperation between the two nations. With Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s upcoming visit to India, defense deals, including the submarine project, are expected to top the agenda.
