Gen Z Protests In Nepal Turn Deadly Over Social Media Ban
A nationwide protest led mainly by young people erupted in Nepal after the government banned 26 major social media platforms—including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and X—for failing to register under new regulations. The ban, which took effect on September 4, sparked anger across the country, with Gen Z activists using remaining platforms like TikTok to mobilize demonstrations demanding freedom of expression and action against corruption.
Clashes Escalate Outside Parliament
Thousands gathered near the parliament in Kathmandu, where protests quickly turned violent. Demonstrators tried to breach barriers and storm government buildings. Security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and in some cases live ammunition. A curfew was imposed in government zones, and the army was deployed to restore order.
Casualties Vary Across Reports
Reports of casualties differ, but most confirm between 14 and 19 deaths, with over 100 people injured, including members of the security forces. Hospitals treated many with serious injuries, particularly head and chest wounds. Aid groups described the situation as critical and chaotic.
Calls For Accountability And Rights Protection
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, condemned the use of lethal force. They demanded an independent investigation into the crackdown and urged Nepal’s authorities to ensure accountability while protecting the rights of protesters.
