GE Delivers Fourth Engine to HAL for Tejas Mk1A
GE Aerospace has delivered the fourth GE-F404-IN20 engine to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), fulfilling part of a contract signed in 2021. This engine is destined for India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A program.
Contract and Delivery Background
Under the 2021 agreement, HAL is to receive 99 F404-IN20 engines along with support services. The first engine under this order was delivered in March 2025, after earlier delays due to supply chain and production issues. Now, with the fourth unit handed over, the delivery process continues to move forward.
Role in Tejas Mk1A Induction
The F404-IN20 engine is the powerplant for the Tejas Mk1A variant. These fighters are expected to enter service with the Indian Air Force soon. The steady supply of engines is critical to meet production and induction schedules.
Challenges and Forward Plans
The initial delivery schedule faced disruptions because GE had suspended the F404-IN20 production line earlier. Since then, the line was restarted and deliveries resumed, with plans to ramp up supply. GE has committed to supplying two engines per month through 2025 to keep pace with HAL’s production needs.
Meanwhile, India and HAL are also in talks with GE for new orders beyond the existing contract. An additional order for 113 engines, valued at about $1 billion, is said to be in advanced stages of negotiation.
