Gambhir Backs Arshdeep After Final Flashpoint
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has backed fast bowler Arshdeep Singh after his on-field flashpoint with New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, saying the pacer did not need to apologise for playing with aggression. The comments came days after the incident drew attention during India’s title-winning victory in Ahmedabad.
Gautam Gambhir Backs Arshdeep Singh
Gambhir said Arshdeep’s reaction should be seen in the context of the intensity of a World Cup final rather than as something that needed excessive criticism. The India coach defended the left-arm pacer’s competitive edge and suggested that aggression remains part of high-level sport when players are under pressure in major contests. His remarks have added another layer to the post-match discussion around the final.
Arshdeep Singh Daryl Mitchell Incident
The incident took place during New Zealand’s chase when Arshdeep collected the ball and threw it back after Mitchell played a shot, only for it to hit the batter on the pads. Mitchell reacted immediately, and the umpires stepped in as tensions briefly rose. India captain Suryakumar Yadav was also seen speaking to Mitchell during the exchange. Arshdeep later moved to defuse the moment during the match, and the situation did not escalate further.
ICC Fine After T20 World Cup Final
The ICC later fined Arshdeep 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching the Code of Conduct over the throw. The sanction was classified as a Level 1 offence, the lightest category under the disciplinary framework. Despite the controversy, the episode did little to affect the result as India went on to beat New Zealand by 96 runs and lift the T20 World Cup title. Gambhir’s comments now frame the incident as part of the emotional intensity of a major final rather than a defining controversy.
