F‑35B Stealth Jet Set to Leave Kerala Tomorrow

The Royal Navy’s F‑35B stealth fighter jet, which made an emergency landing in Kerala more than five weeks ago, is now ready to fly out. Final checks have been completed, and the aircraft is expected to depart Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on July 22, subject to weather and flight clearance.

The fifth-generation fighter had been grounded since June 14 after a hydraulic failure mid-air forced the pilot to divert. The Indian Air Force coordinated the landing safely during adverse weather conditions.

Repair Team Completes Technical Overhaul

A 24-member technical crew from the United Kingdom, including engineers from Lockheed Martin and Royal Air Force specialists, worked over several weeks to assess and fix the jet. It was towed into a hangar on July 6 and underwent a complete hydraulic system overhaul. The repair was completed on July 21, clearing the aircraft for departure.

Stealth Technology Tightens Security

Because the F‑35B is equipped with highly classified stealth capabilities, security was tightened throughout its stay. Indian authorities maintained strict surveillance, and initial plans to fly the jet out or airlift it in a military cargo aircraft were both kept under consideration until repairs were confirmed successful.

Unexpected Spotlight in Kerala

The aircraft’s extended stay turned into an internet sensation, with social media users creating memes and Kerala’s tourism handle even jokingly welcoming the fighter jet. Meanwhile, airport authorities are assessing if charges will be levied for hangar use and extended parking.

With all repairs done and clearance granted, the jet is now set to return to its home carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, resuming its international mission.
