Friedrich Merz Says Rules-Based Global Order Has Collapsed

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned world leaders that the traditional rules-based international order has effectively broken down, urging Europe to prepare for a period shaped by major power rivalry.

Munich Security Conference Global Order Warning

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, Merz said the post-World War II framework built on shared norms no longer functions in its previous form and that global politics is increasingly defined by competition among powerful states. He cautioned that Europeans cannot assume security and prosperity are guaranteed and may need to make sacrifices in the changing geopolitical environment.

He described the moment as a turning point in international relations and stressed that political realities now differ significantly from the earlier cooperative model.

Europe US Relations And NATO Debate

Merz acknowledged growing disagreements between Europe and the United States, saying a divide has emerged across the Atlantic. He emphasised, however, that cooperation remains essential and argued that neither side would benefit from separation.

He added that NATO continues to be strategically valuable for both Europe and the US, and called for rebuilding trust while strengthening Europe’s own defence capacity within the alliance.

Wider Global Security Implications

European leaders at the summit also highlighted the need for greater regional responsibility in defence and technology as geopolitical competition intensifies. Officials said countries must adapt policies to a faster changing world where alliances and assumptions are evolving.

The discussions come amid ongoing international tensions and diplomatic engagement on multiple conflicts, underscoring broader uncertainty in global security arrangements.
