France’s ‘Block Everything’ Protests Sweep Major Cities

France saw widespread protests under the slogan “Block Everything”, with demonstrators blocking roads, burning barricades, and staging rallies in cities such as Paris, Marseille, Nantes, Toulouse, Rennes, Montpellier, Lyon, and Bordeaux. The protests coincided with the appointment of a new prime minister amid growing anger over austerity measures.

Arrests And Disruptions

French authorities deployed around 80,000 security personnel, including 6,000 in Paris. Between 75 and nearly 300 people were arrested nationwide. Rail and road disruptions were widespread, with at least one bus and a roadside fire reported near Toulouse.

Protest Drivers

The movement emerged amid frustration over proposed public spending cuts exceeding €40 billion, elimination of two national holidays, and skepticism toward the political elite. It began online with right-wing origins but quickly expanded to include leftist groups, unions, and students—echoing earlier unrest like the Yellow Vest protests.

Clashes And Vandalism

In many locations, police used tear gas to disperse crowds. Protesters engaged in acts like burning trash bins and setting fires. Some officers were injured, and infrastructure damage was reported in multiple cities.
