France Signals Stronger India Defence Cooperation
France President Emmanuel Macron has said that the Dassault Rafale fighter jet will strengthen India’s defence capabilities and signalled that New Delhi and Paris may expand their defence cooperation, including higher indigenous content in future deals and potential submarine sales.
Rafale To Make India Stronger Defence Capability
President Macron stated that the Rafale aircraft contributes significantly to India’s air power and strategic deterrence. India has procured multiple Rafale jets under an earlier agreement, and the aircraft is now operational with the Indian Air Force. The platform’s advanced avionics, weapon systems and multirole capability were highlighted as key factors enhancing readiness and modernisation of India’s air combat fleet.
Macron also noted that the existing partnership on Rafale production and support has laid a groundwork for deeper defence ties between the two countries.
Willing To Increase Indigenous Content In Defence Deals
In discussions with Indian officials, France expressed readiness to increase indigenous content in future defence deals with India. This would mean a greater share of production and supply chain activities taking place in India, aligning with New Delhi’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing under its policy initiatives. Enhanced technology transfer and joint production were identified as potential areas of cooperation.
France Ready To Sell More Submarines To India
President Macron indicated that France is open to exploring additional defence sales, including selling submarines to India. India’s navy has been expanding its underwater fleet, and French-built conventional submarines could be considered for future procurement requirements. Enhanced bilateral cooperation in naval capabilities was seen as a component of broader strategic ties.
The remarks reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen India-France defence cooperation across air, land and maritime domains.
