Four More Nations Show Interest in India’s BrahMos Missile
India’s defense export sector is witnessing increased global interest as four additional nations—United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Vietnam—have expressed interest in procuring the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This development follows India’s successful sale of BrahMos to the Philippines and ongoing negotiations with Indonesia, highlighting the missile system’s growing international appeal.
The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya, is a high-speed, precision-strike weapon with a maximum speed of 2.8 Mach. It is capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms, making it a versatile and strategic asset.
The Philippines was the first international buyer of BrahMos, acquiring a shore-based variant with a 290 km range for coastal defense. The deal, finalized in 2022, saw the first deliveries in 2023, enhancing the country’s deterrence capabilities in the South China Sea. Indonesia is also in advanced talks with India regarding a potential purchase, with military delegations expected to visit India for further discussions.
The latest interest from UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Vietnam predominantly concerns the land-based version of BrahMos, with some discussions also exploring naval applications. Meanwhile, India continues to develop the BrahMos Next-Generation (NG) variant, a lighter and more compact missile suitable for deployment on aircraft like the Sukhoi-30MKI.
With increasing global demand, India’s defense exports are gaining traction, reinforcing its position as a reliable supplier of advanced missile systems.
