Four Arrested for Pre-Christmas Vandalism in Assam
Four people have been arrested in Assam’s Nalbari district for vandalising Christmas decorations at a private school and damaging festive items at nearby shops ahead of Christmas. The incident took place at St Mary’s School in the Panigaon area when the institution was closed for winter holidays. Police said the accused entered the school premises without authorisation and destroyed decorative lights, plant pots, and other Christmas-related items. Some objects were also set on fire, causing damage to school property.
Police Action and Charges
Following a complaint, a case was registered at the local police station and an investigation was launched. Police confirmed that the four arrested individuals are local office-bearers associated with Hindu right-wing organisations. They were taken into custody on charges including criminal trespass, mischief causing damage to property, and intimidation. Officials said further legal provisions may be added as the investigation progresses.
Damage Beyond School Premises
Authorities said the group also targeted shops in Nalbari town that were selling Christmas decorations and festive merchandise. Several items were reportedly damaged during the incident. Police teams are examining CCTV footage and witness statements to identify whether more people were involved.
Official Response
Local administration officials condemned the vandalism and said such acts would not be tolerated. Police have assured the public that strict action will be taken against all those responsible to maintain communal harmony during the festive season. Security has been increased in sensitive areas to prevent further incidents.
