Former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil Passes Away at 90

Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj V. Patil passed away on Friday morning at the age of 90 at his residence in Latur, Maharashtra. He had been unwell for some time, and his condition reportedly worsened in recent days before his death was confirmed by family members.

A Long and Influential Political Career

Patil’s political journey spanned several decades, beginning at the grassroots level before rising to national prominence. He was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times from the Latur constituency and served as the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1991 to 1996. He later became Union Home Minister in 2004 and held the post until 2008, stepping down after the Mumbai terror attacks.

He also served as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015, adding to his extensive record of public service.

Personal Life and Legacy

Born on October 12, 1935, in Chakur village of Latur district, Patil remained closely connected to his constituency throughout his career. He is survived by his son Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana Patil and two granddaughters. Leaders across party lines have expressed condolences, remembering him as a seasoned parliamentarian and a respected figure in Indian politics.
