Former MP Prajwal Revanna Sentenced to Life for Rape

A special court for elected representatives in Karnataka has sentenced former JD(S) Member of Parliament, Prajwal Revanna, to life imprisonment in a high-profile rape case involving a domestic worker. The court also imposed a fine of ₹5 lakh and directed compensation to the survivor.

Fast-Track Conviction After One-Year Trial

Revanna was convicted following a trial that began in late 2024 and concluded just 14 months later. The court studied evidence including a 2,000-page charge sheet, forensic testimony, and video clips. The survivor’s saree, tested by forensic experts, contained DNA matching the accused. A total of 23 witnesses were examined during the proceedings.

Charges Under Multiple Sections of Indian Law

Revanna was found guilty under several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including aggravated rape (Section 376(2)(k)/(n)) and sexual harassment (Sections 354A, 354B, 354C), along with criminal intimidation and destruction of evidence. He also faced charges under the Information Technology Act for recording the assault without consent.

Emotional Courtroom Scene and Plea for Leniency

Upon hearing the verdict, Revanna, visibly emotional, broke down in court and appealed for a lighter sentence. He cited his educational background and argued political rivalry behind the charges, though the judge held that evidence was clear and consent absent.

Victim Background and Case Origins

The case pertains to allegations of assaults on a 47-year-old woman employed at the Revanna family’s farmhouse in Hassan district and later at Bengaluru. Videos of the incidents surfaced online before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, prompting an SIT investigation and multiple FIRs. Revanna was arrested in May 2024 when he returned from Germany.

Larger Political and Legal Implications

Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, had already been suspended from JD(S). His conviction marks a significant moment in Karnataka politics, reinforcing the principle that no one is above the law, regardless of family background. Legal observers see the case as a precedent in addressing abuse of power.

Ongoing Cases and Next Steps

Revanna is currently the subject of additional investigations in two other sexual assault cases involving different complainants. The court is set to complete sentencing details soon. Meanwhile, authorities continue examining digital and testimonial evidence in related FIRs filed earlier.
