Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren Passes Away at 81
Veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha founder Shibu Soren died earlier today at the age of 81. He was undergoing treatment at Sri Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for over a month before passing away.
Political Trailblazer and Tribal Champion
Credited as a central figure in the movement that led to the creation of the state of Jharkhand in 2000, Soren served as Chief Minister on three occasions. He also held key roles in the national government, including serving as Union Coal Minister. Known affectionately as “Dishom Guruji,” he commanded deep respect among tribal communities across Jharkhand.
Son Hemant Soren Leads Mourning
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Shibu’s son and successor as JMM president, confirmed the news on social media, saying: “Today I feel empty.” He added that his father’s legacy would live on beyond politics and deeply impact tribal rights and governance.
Legacy and Lasting Influence
Soren began his political journey as a trade union organiser and later co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1972. His dedication to tribal land rights and regional autonomy made him an iconic figure. He was elected multiple times to both houses of Parliament, representing Dumka for decades.
Party and State in Transition
As president of the JMM until April 2025, Soren guided the party through numerous elections and coalition shifts. Under his leadership, JMM became a dominant force in Jharkhand politics. His passing marks the end of a long political chapter, with the party now firmly led by Hemant Soren.
Tributes Pour In from Across the Country
Political leaders, tribal advocates, and residents across Jharkhand joined in mourning. Many called his death the close of an era and praised his unwavering commitment to social justice and regional identity.
