Former CJI Gavai Appointed Ambedkar Chair Professor
NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad has appointed Justice B.R. Gavai, former Chief Justice of India, as the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Chair Professor on Constitutional Law and Social Inclusion. Justice Gavai retired in November 2025 after serving as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, and his new role places him at the head of academic and research activities linked to constitutional studies and access to justice.
Role and responsibilities
In this position, Justice Gavai will lead research, teaching and outreach initiatives focused on constitutional law and social inclusion. The chair has been established with financial support from the Government of Telangana and aims to promote scholarship that advances legal understanding and inclusion in society.
Supporting academic appointments
To support the chair’s activities, NALSAR has also appointed Dr. Anurag Bhaskar, former Director of the Centre for Research and Planning at the Supreme Court of India, as Visiting Adjunct Professor of Law and Director of the chair. Additionally, Senior Advocate K. Parameshwar has been named as an Adjunct Professor to contribute to the chair’s academic and outreach efforts.
Future plans for the chair
The university plans to soon recruit a research team and launch thematic projects, academic programmes, policy studies and public engagement initiatives aligned with the chair’s mandate. The appointment letter was formally handed over to Justice Gavai by the Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR at his residence.
